Past Imperfect

Past Imperfect: Album of the Unknown Family
mixed media on paper

This series features a photograph album found by the artist during a residency in St. Etienne, France. Using images of the opened book, its Victorian cyanotypes, decaying covers and marbled endpapers, that are then mounted on sheets of irregularly sized rag paper and “embalmed” within thickly poured resin, the whole juxtaposes the frozen time formality of portrait photography with the effects of time, deterioration, disintegration and regeneration.

“Cobbled from a decomposing family album found in France, it’s century-old photos are entombed in plastic like flies in amber, resulting in a memorial Tomb of the Unknown Family.” – D.Eric Bookhardt, Gambit Weekly
