Biography of a Ballplayer
Biography of a Ballplayer / silkscreened print commissioned by the Contemporary Arts Center, New Orleans as the 1997 Collectors’ Club Print.
Inspired by her professional baseball player father, “Biography of a Ballplayer” embodies Gilbert’s characteristic method of rummaging (a pursuit she enjoyed in her mother’s closet as a child), resulting in a multi-layered collage. Gilbert sees her works, which are born from a studio littered with stacks of open books, as “contemporary cave paintings” because they create an immediate history for the viewer. Her work incorporates childhood lessons in scrapbook making and assembling remnants, a process she calls “an attempt to record the texture and fabric of a life.”
